Summary

A single-bolus dose of the anesthetic etomidate continues to be used in emergency departments for rapid-sequence induction before endotracheal intubation despite concerns related to adrenal suppression and poorer outcomes. A trial examining the effect of etomidate on outcomes including mortality and length of stay (LOS) showed no statistically significant difference between patients receiving etomidate and patients receiving other induction agents.
